Passing of Dr. Horacio Beccar Varela (06.28.1931 – 09.14.2023).
Buenos Aires, September 21st, 2023. It is with great sadness that Beccar Varela announces the passing of its beloved former partner and former president of the Executive Committee, Horacio Beccar Varela, father of the current managing partner, on September 14th, in the city of Escobar.
Horacio obtained his Law degree from Universidad de Buenos Aires in 1953. He was one of the first Argentines to obtain an LLM from Harvard University, in 1958. He began his career at Beccar Varela, the law firm founded by his grandfather, where he developed an extensive practice focused on the areas of corporate law, mergers & acquisitions, and banking law. Horacio contributed enormously to the firm’s development and mentored many of its lawyers and team members. Between 1982 and 1986, he served as president of the firm’s Executive Committee. Likewise, he held important positions in top-level companies, such as vice president of Scania and member of the Supervisory Board of Alpargatas. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Council of Commerce and Production (CICYP, by its acronym in Spanish).
Horacio stood out for both his perseverance and his generosity. He had a permanent predisposition to share his knowledge with peers and students. Roberto Crouzel, partner of the firm, remembers him as “Generous, with a big heart, he helped me throughout my professional career with total selflessness. A great person that I will always remember with the utmost affection. He gifted me his teaching and advice, and the joy of having shared many years together.”
Sports were one of Horacio’s great passions, especially golf and soccer. He played golf regularly and was president for two years of the Ranelagh Golf Club, in Berazategui.
Horacio lived surrounded by the affection of his family, consisting of his wife Lucía Adrogué, his six children, fifteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
