Beccar Varela presents its latest Sustainability Report.
Buenos Aires, November 22nd, 2022. Beccar Varela presents its most recent sustainability report, titled “Experience and Innovation for a Sustainable Future”, which describes the firm’s work throughout the 2020-21 period. Various teams participated in drafting the report under the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards.
Beccar Varela’s sustainability strategy consists of three core dimensions: legal advice considering ESG criteria, which aims to provide legal solutions that integrate environmental, social, and governance aspects; responsible business management, focused on the firm’s employees, following best corporate governance practices and caring for the environment; and community relations, through excellent pro bono advice and by supporting education for those most in need through its Dar Project. Throughout the period, the firm successfully achieved and surpassed goals related to the three strategy dimensions, particularly in team care and well-being as well as its work to support vulnerable communities impacted by the consequences of the pandemic.
With the aim of prioritizing the firm members’ care and safety, Managing Partner Horacio Beccar Varela mentions that “we implemented a safe work protocol with a gender perspective and formed an interdisciplinary teleworking team to reconcile daily work activities and their new modality.” Partner Fernanda Mierez emphasizes that “the challenges of this period underlined the relevance that ESG aspects demand in legal advice.” Among initiatives highlighted in the report, the firm participated in sustainable finance projects, in which it assisted companies, non-profit organizations, and governments to develop financing alternatives oriented towards positive social and environmental impact, as is the case of one of the first Social, Green and Sustainability (SGS) bonds in Argentina issued by a civil society organization and the joint work with the National Securities Commission to help foundations and civil associations access capital markets. In line with the community relations programs, the firm expanded its programs including through innovations in virtual interactions to reach ever more partners. During this period, Beccar Varela’s Pro Bono Program celebrated its 20th anniversary, and doubled the number of hours dedicated to pro bono work. This team continues to grow, incorporating more partners and lawyers who dedicate their time and knowledge to provide legal advice and promote access to justice for the most vulnerable. An example of the project’s evolution is the recent environmental law and climate change team adhesion.
Beccar Varela is a leading law firm in Argentina that advises local and international companies in all areas of corporate law across all industries. It is the country’s first full-service firm to join the United Nations Global Compact and to issue a sustainability report. In 2022 the firm celebrated its 125th anniversary.
